Precision counts – measure drill diameters and threads correctly
Why trade fairs are so important
When drilling and tapping, a tenth of a millimeter often makes the difference between success and failure.
Precision is particularly crucial for metal parts so that threads fit exactly and screws grip securely.
The most important measuring tools
-
Vernier caliper: For bore diameter, depth and external dimensions.
-
Thread gauge: For determining thread pitch and profile.
-
Micrometer: For exact outside diameters or shafts.
-
Limit plug gauges: Industry standard for checking internal threads.
Avoid typical mistakes
-
Measuring device not zeroed → incorrect values
-
Workpiece not cleaned → chips or oil distort the result
-
Incorrect angle when measuring → inaccuracy
Practical tip: Check core hole dimensions
Before threading, the core hole size should be correct.
Example:
-
For M6 → 5.0 mm bore
-
For M8 → 6.8 mm bore
-
For M10 → 8.5 mm bore
This is the only way the tap will grip evenly and cut cleanly.
Measuring is not a side step, but part of the craft.
With a thread gauge, caliper and a little practice you can achieve precise results that fit and last.
